A few miles east of Lagos, easily accessible from the Via do Infante motorway (A22) (or a very pleasant 10 minute train journey) is Portimao.  This is the largest port in the Algarve – full of hustle and bustle, great shopping and a good nightlife.  It’s well worth a visit.  Take your time to browse around the many shops, enjoy some street theatre, music, fountains and water features, pause for breaks in a huge choice of restaurants, street cafes and bars and absorb all of the wonderful sights and sounds on offer.
Very close is Alvor, which is especially good for birdwatchers and walkers - the Alvor estuary being a stopover for great flocks of migratory birds on their long journey south from Northern Europe.  Or drive a little further inland into the Monchique mountains to enjoy breathtaking and stunning views of the Algarve up into Foia (902m).
Golfers also have a treat here as nearby there is the famous Penina course as well as the Alto Club and the Vale do Milho.
